Flooring with Purpose: Combining Style and Functionality

Only a few features combine form and function quite like flooring. Even though you literally walk over it, it’s a crucial element that brings comfort and design together in a house. Choosing the right flooring for your space can make or break your home design style.

Whether you’re installing new flooring in your home or replacing it, Cline Construction can be your perfect solution. In this guide, we’ll show you the ideal options of flooring that can adapt to your fashion without compromising functionality and comfortability.

Outdoor/Indoor

You wouldn’t imagine the atrocious combinations we have seen in renovations throughout the years. White outdoor tile in a living-room? Check. Hardwood on a deck? That, too. So, without trying to state the obvious, we strongly recommend doing thorough research into whether your materials are intended for the space you will install them in.

That said, though, play is always key in design, and a smart and innovative designer might actually cheekily use the “wrong” material. It’s all in the purpose and functionality!

Design

Regardless of the part of the house, you should be okay with how the flooring looks. Indoors, the design of each room marks the aesthetic you are going to choose for the floor,

In outdoor flooring, although it’s not mandatory, the most common is a matte finish. Also, in terms of colors and designs, it’s normal to choose something more natural-looking.

Safety

This is considered a key point when it comes to deciding on the flooring of your house. It’s important that whatever you choose for the outdoors is a non-slip material to avoid accidents that start with tripping over the wet floor.

Types of Flooring That Will Upgrade Your Space

Hardwood Flooring

A classic that never goes out of style, the durable hardwood floors often bring warmth and beauty to any space. Many types of wood can be used, such as oak, maple, cherry, walnut, etc.

Hardwood floors are installed using a variety of techniques. Generally, they involve preparing the subfloor, laying down the underlayment, placing the hardwood planks, nailing or gluing them, and finishing with sanding and sealing.

Engineered Wood

The engineered wood flooring is an alternative to solid hardwood flooring. It’s created by bonding many layers of wood, typically made of a thin top layer of hardwood veneer, connected to a core of plywood or high-density fiberboard. Engineered wood floors are installed following similar steps to hardwood floors.

Laminate Flooring

This product is designed to imitate the look of natural materials like tiles, hardwood, stone, etc. It’s made with several layers combined together through a lamination process. Laminate flooring is installed  by preparing the subfloor, laying down the underlayment, clicking or gluing the planks, and finishing with trim installation.

Vinyl Flooring

This flooring is made with synthetic materials, mainly PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and other elements like plasticizers, stabilizers, and pigments. They are pressed and heated to make vinyl sheets or tiles. Vinyl flooring is installed with different methods, including peel-and-stick, floating, or glue-down installation.

Tile Flooring

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are by far the most popular options. Porcelain tiles are based on a more refined clay mixture and heated at higher temperatures than ceramic tiles, making them more dense and with less pores.

Stone Flooring

There’s a wide range of materials that can be used to make stone flooring, this includes marble, granite, slate, limestone, sandstone, etc. This special type of flooring is installed by preparing the subfloor, applying mortar or adhesive, laying the stones, grouting the joints, and finishing with sealing and polishing.
